There is a long tradition of art outliving its market. Of artists making while the rooms that decide value rearrange themselves. Of movements named in hindsight by people who weren't in the studio.

Progressive is for the people in the studio.

The name carries three meanings, and we mean all of them. Art-historical — the lineage of artists who moved the form forward without permission. Political — an insistence on access and alternative pathways for artists the legacy market has not served. And literal — moving forward: a deadline met, a first application sent, a residency accepted. One step, then another.

The inheritance

Bombay, December 1947 · kept quiet, not cosplayed

In December 1947, six artists in a newly independent Bombay — Souza, Raza, Husain, Ara, Gade, Bakre — formed the Progressive Artists' Group. Their founding grievance is the part most people forget: the opaque, arbitrary way exhibitions were judged. They wanted transparency in selection and an equal ground for rising artists to be seen.

We borrow the name and one idea: a fair, open ground for artists, set by artists. Open calls with named sources and visible criteria are the modern form of that demand. If you never learn the reference, everything here still works. If you do, it deepens.

The split

On every receipt, in writing
80 / 20

When a work sells here, the artist keeps 80%. The conventional gallery takes half. We think the number is the argument — the 1947 inheritance made structural, with a receipt. The 20% funds the ground: the exhibitions, the magazine, the directory, Pre.

Price is metadata, set in mono like a deadline — a fact, not a pitch. If a work is for sale, the price is visible. If the artist prefers conversation, the button says Inquire and means it. Free-to-see is first-class: no viewing-room gates, no email walls in front of images. Default status for every work is not for sale.

How exhibitions are chosen

No mystery panels

Exhibitions are curated for the work, not the market. Wall text never mentions investment, scarcity, or “opportunity.” Criteria are published with every call for a show: what we are looking at, who is looking, and when you will hear back. A no is information, not a verdict — and we will tell you the honest reason when there is one.

Pre does four things well: finds open calls that fit your practice (always naming its source), helps with applications (drafting in your voice, never over it), answers plain questions about pricing, contracts, and taxes, and keeps a private record so each application is faster than the last.

Pre will not invent calls, deadlines, or fees. It will not give legal or tax advice. It will not pretend the market is fair. And it will not cheerlead — it witnesses.
